Rosneft Reduces Air Pollution by 25% in Five Years

09 September 2024

7 September marked the fifth International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies since its establishment by the UN General Assembly in 2019.

Rosneft has spent more than 270 billion roubles on environmental protection over five years, which has enabled its enterprises to significantly improve a number of environmental indicators, including a 25% reduction in gross air pollution.

As part of its contribution to Russia’s National Development Goals and in support of the Federal Clean Air Project, Rosneft has developed an action plan to create a corporate programme to reduce industrial emissions.

In 2023, the Company increased its green investments by 12%. In particular, 3.84 billion roubles were allocated to air protection.

Responsible attitude towards the environment is an integral part of Rosneft Oil Company’s corporate culture and one of the key operating principles. The Company has been a member of the UN Global Compact for more than 10 years, reaffirming its commitment to 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The Company’s key strategic goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Rosneft has been implementing a project to control fugitive emissions of methane and other hydrocarbons for several years. In total, air and soil monitoring of methane emission sources in 2023 covered more than 800 sites at 27 extractive enterprises.

The Company’s environmental objectives include increasing the production of natural gas as a fuel with lower greenhouse gas emissions; developing and manufacturing new products that enable customers to reduce their environmental impact, reduce their carbon footprint and improve the efficiency of their production facilities.

Rosneft develops and implements its own cutting-edge technologies, including those related to air quality control. For example, the Company’s laboratory specialists have developed new air monitoring methods, which have been certified and submitted to the Federal Information Fund on the Uniformity of Measurements. Their introduction has increased the efficiency of air monitoring at a number of enterprises by 35%.

In 2023, the Company’s expenditure on R&D with an environmental impact, including targeted innovation projects, will amount to 316.4 million roubles.

Vostok Oil’s flagship project is also implementing new environmental protection technologies that will enable it to reduce the specific emission intensity during its operation by four times compared to the indicators of new fields of major international companies.

Rosneft has traditionally paid great attention to the conservation and restoration of natural resources, including forested areas. Forest plantations help to clean the air and are a natural sequester of greenhouse gases. In 2023, the Company’s enterprises planted around 10 million tree seedlings in the regions of operation, and over 26 million in the last three years.
