RN-Vankor, a subsidiary of Rosneft’s oil and gas complex, held the EcoArctic Forum in Krasnoyarsk Krai, the territory of the Company’s flagship Vostok Oil project.

The EcoArctic Forum, which has evolved into an annual occurrence, provides an open platform for representatives of the authorities, local population and the scientific community to engage in productive dialogue about safeguarding the Arctic’s fragile ecosystems and preserving traditional livelihoods of the Taymyr Peninsula’s indigenous communities.

A key event in the Forum’s program was the Reindeer Herder’s Day, organised with the support of oilmen in the Nosok settlement of the Taymyrsky Dolgano-Nenetsky District. About two thousand people live here, of which almost 90% are representatives of indigenous minorities. Around 300 locals competed in traditional events – reindeer sled races, the national triple jump, pole pulling, throwing maut on a khorey (a harness thrown over a long pole used to chase reindeer) and jumping over sledges – took part in a traditional dress contest and treated guests to northern dishes. All winners received gifts from RN-Vankor. The festival culminated in a concert given by creative groups from Dudinka and the village of Karaul.

This year, the EcoArctic Forum expanded its geography to the regional centre. In Krasnoyarsk, the event included a roundtable discussion over RN-Vankor’s grant program to support scientific, environmental and social research that carries potential practical benefits for the Taymyrsky Dolgano-Nenetsky District and its indigenous population. Representatives of authorities and non-governmental organisations, as well as scientists and conservationists, participated in the discussion.

Biologists from the Arctic Research and Design Centre for Continental Shelf Development told the Forum participants about the implementation of a joint comprehensive Ecology program with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation and new areas of Rosneft’s biomonitoring activities in the north of Krasnoyarsk Krai. Experts from RN-Shelf-Arctic, another one of Rosneft’s subsidiaries, shared their best practices in preserving the Arctic’s native plant species listed in the Red Boks of the Russian Federation and the Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
