Rosneft-Supported Scientists Preserve Population of Northern Forest Reindeer in Tyumen Region

29 February 2024

Thanks to the support of RN-Uvatneftegaz (an enterprise of Rosneft Oil Company’s upstream complex), scientists from the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences have confirmed the fact that the red-nosed forest reindeer is a permanent resident of the Tyumen Region. The research is carried out within the framework of the long-term grant programme of the enterprise to study the state of populations of various animal species included in the Red List of the Tyumen Region and Russia.

Zoologists conducted photographic monitoring in the Uvat District of the Tyumen Region. About 60 individuals of this species were recorded by camera traps installed near reindeer trails. The research allowed obtaining valuable data on reindeer habits, population size and proving the fact of permanent habitat of the red-listed animal in the south of the Tyumen Region.

Scientists have established that, during the snow-free period, reindeer mainly lead a single-family lifestyle, and with the onset of cold weather, they gather in herds of several dozen individuals. Surveys will continue during the winter period using camera traps and aerial monitoring. Observations will help track the seasonal migration routes of these animals.

The RN-Uvatneftegaz project to study and conserve the forest reindeer is of great practical importance for the Tyumen Region, as the region lacked up-to-date information on this red-listed animal.

Based on the data obtained, experts will develop measures to preserve the deer habitat and create conditions to increase the population size. To provide the ungulates with vital minerals, zoologists installed salt pans with feeding.

Preservation of the environment for future generations is an integral part of the corporate culture of Rosneft. The Company’s subsidiaries implement various programmes to conserve and restore natural resources in the regions where they operate.

In 2023, with the support of RN-Uvatneftegaz, the Shpilman Research and Analytical Centre for Rational Use of Subsoil carried out monitoring of large lakes in the Tyumen Region.

In 2022, RN-Uvatneftegaz launched a grant programme to study the status of populations of rare and endangered bird and animal species listed in the Red Books of the Tyumen Region and Russia. These include white-tailed sea eagle, Eurasian curlew, black-throated loon, mute swan, osprey and others.
