Bashneft’s Wastewater Treatment Plants Process 134 Million m3 of Industrial Wastewater over Five Years

27 February 2024

In 2023, the biological waste treatment complex of the Ufa Group (an enterprise of Rosneft’s refining complex) processed 22.11 million m3 of industrial wastewater. Over 134 million m3 of wastewater has been treated over the entire period of operation, since the facility was launched in 2018.

Biological waste treatment complex serves not only Bashneft’s refineries, but also treats wastewater from 66 enterprises in Ufa’s northern industrial zone and storm water runoff.

Rational use of water resources and their replenishment is one of Rosneft’s priorities in the field of environmental protection. Ufa Group’s biological waste treatment complex ensures the highest level of treatment of industrial, storm and domestic wastewater, which increases the volume of reused water in technological processes by 2.5 times. The membrane reactor technology removes all impurities and microorganisms from the wastewater. As a result, the water quality meets the standards for fishery water bodies.

Today, water intake for production needs from the Belaya River - the main water artery of the Republic of Bashkortostan - has been reduced by more than 50%. In the future, the biological treatment facilities will completely switch to a closed cycle of wastewater processing and stop abstracting river water.

The Company’s enterprises undertake projects to restore natural resources, protect ecosystems and biodiversity. The Company organises activities to preserve and restore aquatic biological resources. In 2023, more than 26 thousand fish fry, including valuable and endangered species, were released into rivers. Over the last five years, the enterprise has released more than 5 million young fish fry into the water bodies of Bashkiria and neighbouring regions.

In 2023, Bashneft employees planted 515,000 tree seedlings, including 30,000 in the Asly-Kul Nature Park in Davlekanovsky District to save Lake Aslikul from shoaling. In just five years, Bashneft has planted more than 4.5 million seedlings on more than 1,300 hectares in the regions where the Company operates.
