Rosneft Plants more than 18 Million Trees in Three Years

21 March 2023

Employees of Rosneft Oil Company and its subsidiaries planted more than 18 million seedlings of trees of various species in 2020-2022.

21 March marks International Forest Day, which was established by the United Nations General Assembly to draw attention to the sustainable management of these natural resources. The main theme of the day in 2023 is Forests and Health. Forests purify water and air, help maintain the planet’s temperature and absorb carbon; they also play an important role in preserving biodiversity and ecosystems.

Rosneft devotes considerable attention to reforestation activities, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of ecosystems, preserving biodiversity, and combating climate change.

In 2022, more than 50 Rosneft subsidiaries planted trees in the Khanty-Mansi and Yamalo-Nenets autonomous districts, Krasnoyarsk, Khabarovsk, Krasnodar territories, Irkutsk, Samara, Orenburg, Ryazan, Tomsk, Leningrad regions, as well as in Udmurtia, Bashkiria and Moscow City. RN-Yuganskneftegaz, RN-Nyaganneftegaz, Vostsibneftegaz, Kondaneft, RN-Uvatneftegaz, Bashneft, RN-Purneftegaz made the greatest contribution to reforestation.

Moreover, Rosneft launched a large-scale environmental forestation project in the Krasnoyarsk Territory in 2022, with a total sink potential of 10 million tonnes CO2e. The project aims not only to make a significant contribution to combating climate change, but also to provide a methodological and regulatory framework for the development of climate projects in Russia.

Of great importance are activities aimed at restoring forests in specially protected areas, as well as environmental education initiatives. For example, employees of the Angarsk Catalyst and Organic Synthesis Plant planted three to six-year-old pine trees within the water protection zone of the Yershov Bay in Irkutsk, contributing to the restoration of the local ecosystem. Volunteers from Komsomolsk Refinery, together with students from Lyceum 33, planted young pine trees on the school grounds in Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

Employees and their families participate in various environmental events, such as Green Spring, Forest Planting Day, Save the Forest; arrange clean-up days and clean the banks of rivers, reservoirs and springs; support the Green Office initiative; and help botanical gardens and zoos.

Note for Editors:

The Rosneft 2030 Strategy: Reliable Energy and Global Energy Transition defines the Company’s main long-term development goal of achieving net carbon neutrality by 2050 for Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

The Rosneft 2030 Strategy also outlines short- and medium-term goals for the climate agenda: to reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 5% by 2025; to reduce methane emissions to below 0.2%; to achieve zero routine flaring of associated gas and to reduce specific greenhouse gas emissions in the upstream segment to below 20 kg СО2/boe by 2030; to reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions by more than 25% by 2035.

Over the past five years (from 2018 through 2022), the Company’s green investments, designed to make the business greener and minimise its environmental impact, amounted to some 270 billion roubles.
