Bashneft (an enterprise of Rosneft Oil Company) allocated more than 6.5 billion roubles to environmental projects in 2021, a 16% increase on the previous year. The measures implemented have resulted in a total atmospheric air pollution reduction of 10%. The enterprise also invested in safe disposal of industrial waste, land remediation, reforestation and fish restocking.
Preservation of the environment for future generations is an integral part of the corporate culture of Rosneft. The Company aims to achieve leadership positions in minimising the environmental impact and ensuring the eco-friendliness of its production.
The oil production block achieved the greatest reduction in air impact by the end of 2021, to 16%. Associated petroleum gas utilisation in the main production region, the Republic of Bashkortostan, was 97%, with a standard of at least 95%.
The ongoing upgrading of the Ufa refinery complex is of great importance in minimising the impact on the environment. The enterprise’s refineries fully utilise hydrogen sulphide gas. This by-product of green fuel production is processed into sulphur, which is widely used in various industries and also as the basis for agricultural fertilisers.
Last year, Bashneft increased its recycling of oily waste by 26% and ensured that more than 196,000 tonnes were recycled. Almost all of those were recycled in-house at specialised sites using state-of-the-art technology that passed the state environmental impact assessment as the safest for the environment. The volume of accumulated oil sludge decreased by 11% year-on-year for the enterprise as a whole. Moreover, Bashneft remediated over 16 hectares of lands in the area of oil fields development in Bashkortostan last year.
Another important area of Bashneft’s environmental activities is the protection of ecosystems and biodiversity and the replenishment of natural resources. In 2021, Bashneft released more than 672,000 fry of valuable fish species into water bodies of Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Perm Territory, Nenets and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Districts.
The enterprise conducted the largest greening of its areas of operation in 20 years. More than 3.6 million conifer seedlings were planted on more than 900 hectares of land in the regions of operation. The largest planting campaign was carried out in Bashkortostan: during the spring and summer of 2021, oil workers planted 3.1 million fir and pine trees on an area of 722 hectares in 17 districts of the Republic.
