The Syzran Refinery (part of Rosneft’s refining complex) has begun installing equipment for the aeration system of the biological treatment unit as part of the reconstruction of the treatment facilities. This upgrade will implement membrane bioreactor technology, which provides a high degree of wastewater treatment.
The renovation of the biological wastewater treatment facilities is one of the enterprise’s key environmental projects. The maximum daily capacity of the biological treatment facilities at the Syzran Refinery is 32,000 m3. The membrane bioreactor provides a combined technology that integrates the advantages of the biological and ultrafiltration processes, enabling deep treatment of wastewater from organic and mineral pollutants with 99% efficiency.
The Company aims to achieve leadership positions in minimizing the environmental impact and ensuring the eco-friendliness of its production. The Company’s Environmental Vision by 2035 aims to minimise the impact on the environment, particularly by introducing the best technologies available and consequently increasing the efficiency of waste management, land remediation, wastewater treatment and emissions.
The Syzran Refinery is implementing a long-term environmental protection programme, which includes modernising and constructing environmental facilities, improving its environmental management system, and carrying out publicly significant environmental protection campaigns.
In 2021, the enterprise spent more than 1.8 billion roubles on environmental protection activities. The main environmental projects in addition to the reconstruction of the BWT include improving pipeline reliability, air, soil and water monitoring, efficient water management, land remediation and bio-resource replenishment in the region of operation.
For more than a decade, the enterprise has been working to replenish river biological resources. In 2021 alone, 128,000 sterlet and carp fry were released into the Volga.
A multi-purpose mobile environmental station has been commissioned to monitor water and soil at the Syzran Refinery. The mobile laboratory’s equipment makes it possible to assess the quality of natural water, wastewater, blockflow water, take soil samples and determine their physical and chemical properties on site.
The enterprise is a four-time laureat of the Leader in Environmental Protection national competition in the category Best Environmental Policy in the Refining Industry. The national competition is held annually under the auspices of the relevant committees of the Federation Council and the State Duma of the Russian Federation to recognise Russian enterprises and organisations for their proactive environmental protection and rational use of natural resources that contribute to the sustainable development of the Russian economy, improve public health and ensure environmental safety of the country.
Note for Editors:
Syzran Refinery JSC, a subsidiary of Rosneft Oil Company, produces more than 30 different petroleum products, which are in high market demand: motor gasolines and diesel fuels of highest emission standard, liquefied petroleum gas, bitumen, highly eco-friendly low-sulphur marine fuels and so on.
The enterprise continues to implement a large-scale modernisation programme to further increase refining depth, maximise the use of secondary processes to increase the yield of light petroleum products and increase the production of quality motor fuels that meet the requirements of technical regulations.
