Workers of Rosneft's Samara enterprises Kuibyshev and Novokuibyshev refineries as well as Novokuibyshev Oils and Additives Plant held an annual environmental event Springs of the Samara region, which was timed to coincide with the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. Its goal is to clean up natural water sources.
Volunteers restored springs in the village of Bolshaya Kamenka in Krasnoyarsk. This area borders on the natural heritage monument of regional importance called Krasnaya Gora, which is a habitat for plants and animals listed in the Red Book of the region. Workers upgraded fences, landscaped the surrounding areas, removed trash, and took water samples for analysis in a specialized laboratory.
Underground water is the most important source of freshwater. Aquifers play a significant role in maintaining the Earth's water balance and the functioning of all ecosystems. Maintaining adequate levels of underground water and its quality is a major global challenge.
Rosneft reaffirmed its strategic commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals in 2018, among them Clean Water and Sanitation and Responsible Consumption and Production. The Company has been consistently reducing the volume of water withdrawn from underground sources for many years.
The work carried out by volunteers to protect springs is important not only to provide the region's residents with drinking water, but also to preserve the natural balance and unique ecosystem. This campaign is also the part of the Company's contribution in support of the federal program Revitalization of the Volga, which is implemented within the framework of the national project Ecology. Today there are more than 1.5 thousand natural springs in the Samara region. Some of them are actively used by people for domestic needs and reclamation.
With new technologies and the implementation of environmental programs, the enterprises of the Samara group of Rosneft make a significant contribution to the conservation of water resources in the region. For example, enterprises there have reduced water intake from natural sources and increased the level of recycled water use to an average of 94%. There's also work in progress regarding replenishing aquatic bioresources: the Volga water area is stocked with juveniles of valuable fish species: sterlet, carp and bighead carp. In addition, employees of Rosneft subsidiaries actively participate in environmental campaigns to clean up the shores of rivers, lakes, and reservoirs.
