Verkhnechonskneftegaz, an enterprise of the upstream complex of Rosneft Oil Company, has implemented an associated petroleum gas (APG) efficient utilisation project. For the first time in East Siberia, the technology for injecting APG in a temporal underground gas storage facility has been applied at the Verkhnechonskoye field. The uniqueness of this technology lies in the storage of associated feedstock for further rational use, rather than for maintaining reservoir pressure.
This approach has brought APG utilization at the Verkhnechonskoye oil and gas condensate field to 97%. This is one of the best results in the industry.
In accordance with the current Rosneft 2022 Strategy, the Company intends to take a leading position in terms of environmental friendliness of its business and enter the first quartile of international companies in terms of unit greenhouse gas emissions.
The associated gas produced together with crude oil at the Verkhnechonskoye field is used for the technological needs of the field--for the operation of a gas turbine power plant and as fuel for oil heating furnaces and boiler houses. At the moment, 1.3 bcm of associated petroleum gas have been injected in the underground storage.
As part of the project, all the required infrastructure facilities were constructed at the Verkhnechonskoye field, including a gas compressor station with a capacity of more than 1 bcm per year, a 40.9 km long gas injection pipeline, and a well pad with six wells for APG injection. The total project financing exceeded 8.7 billion roubles.
In the last five years, Rosneft has invested over 125 billion roubles in the development of the APG utilization technology for its production assets. It will ensure the greenhouse gas emission reduction by 8 million tonnes by 2022.
In 2018, Rosneft cut its methane emission by 46% year-on-year. The Company’s green investments over the last five years have exceeded 240 billion roubles, and it is planned to invest another 300 billion roubles in the next five years.
In 2018, Rosneft completed the construction of several dozens of APG utilizations facilities, including gas injection, power generation, gas treatment and utilization, and gas transportation infrastructure. The programme to improve the rational use of APG is being implemented in all regions of the Company’s presence. A comprehensive approach is used for new fields, which includes the essential measures to be taken at the stage of drafting design technological documents for field development to ensure the required level of APG rational use.
